Reading With Kurzweil

Step 1:  Open a scanned or saved document onto the Kurzweil screen or you can read from the web by:
  • Selecting read on the main toolbar
  • Slide the cursor down to Read the Web and double click on it 
  • Your computer's browser will open
  • Type in the URL of the page you would like to read
  • Click the Read icon on the reading toolbar that appears on the bottom of the page.





Step 2On the Reading toolbar (yellow brick) customize the reading features:
  • Choose from one of 18 different voices (the three with VW sound the least like a robot).
  • Select the speed you would the document read in.
  • Select if you would like to read continuous or self paced.
  • Select if you would like to highlight the word, sentence, paragraph, or unit while you are reading.
  • Select what language you would like it to be read in (this can also be used as a translator).
  • Select the Read icon (press it again to pause).

Additional reading features:

  • Look up a definition, how to pronounce a word or syllables, and find a synonym for a word by clicking on the word and then the correct icon on the main toolbar.
  • Under View on the Kurzweil toolbar you can magnify spoken words.    
  • Students can highlight important words or phrases and then extract the text to a separate document.
  • Students (or teachers prior to student use) can insert questions or notes using sticky note, text note, footnote, or voice note (see more information on this in the study skills section). 
  • You can extract the notes into a new document and open them side by side.
  • Students can bookmark examples they want to take note of.
